It was inspired by Wrede's Enchanted Forest Cronicles, and incorporates lots of little bits, and a few not so little bits, from the novels. This one is much lighter than DSW, with a humorous undertone for most of the story. Still, it will have some intense moments in the later chapters, so be forewarned. Any way, enjoy. Oh, I should probably mention that the child Sally was pregnant with at the end of DSW has been born. Her name is Julayla, named after Sally's old mentor. Sally walked down the dirt path that formed the 'main street' of New Mobotropolis. Since Packbell's defeat, the blackened blemish known as Robotropolis had been torn down and cleaned out... with one exception. The egg shaped command center still stood dark and foreboding near Mob-harbor, untouched by the elements or vandals since they had put up that force field. Eventually, once the city was more than a group of tents, cheep huts, and skeletal buildings, she planned to build a museum around the place. Her destination, however, was elsewhere. She was approaching the foundation to the new palace, which was being built about a hundred yards from the original. Spitting distance, Sonic called it. The first room to be worked on was the basement, which would contain the Acorn Archives. It would house all of her family's oldest surviving records and documents, plus the sum of Mobian knowledge. However, today she wasn't concerned with the progress of construction. "Chaos Omega!" she called down into the site. Near the bottom, a gray feline wearing a hard hat glanced up at her. After a suprised moment, he gave the foreman some last second instructions and then exploded in a small fireball. Sally jumped inspite of herself as a plume of flame erupted a few feet in front of her. After a moment it coalesced into the gray cat who called himself Chaos Omega. "Your Majesty," he said, making a sweeping bow, "How may I serve you?" The cat's speech was touched with an accent similar to Rosie's, but lower and fancier. "I've been thinking about... something lately," she told him, "I want you to tell me what you know about wizards." "With all due respect, Your Majesty," C'mega said, "This is going to take a while. Considering your condition-" Sally yipped in suprise at this, "we should probably go someplace where we can sit." "How did you know...?" Sally demanded in whisper, "Not even Sonic knows yet...!" "I *am* a wizard, after all." C'mega said, "And I do have a wife and son." "Fine," Sally said, not really satisfied with his answer, "but I don't see why I need to sit down." "You can't risk your health for no reason, Your Majesty." he said, a little too reasonably. She sighed and nodded in acceptance. C'mega returned the nod and began a transportation spell. "You'd think pregnancy was terminal." Sally muttered as they vanished. *** They popped up in the room that had been jokingly named the throne room. The makeshift building, called the Town Hall, was where the repairs were coordinated from, which ment that a lot of people were there to see C'mega and Sally arrive in a puff of smoke. Other than a few bows and 'Your Majesties', on one bothered them. Sonic was out running errands, a habit that really annoyed his body guards, which Sonic in turn found quite amusing. It was rapidly becoming his new hobby. Sally smiled to herself as she showed C'mega into the 'royal office'. She walked over to her green office chair and sat down. C'mega glanced at his choice of places to sit, which included a folding chair and a padded bench, and elected to stand. A long moment passed without any one speaking. Sally thought that if the wizard standing before her still had his tail, he'd be flicking it around nervously. Finally, the feline spoke. "The tale of the wizards begins with the Ancient god Chaos. You, of course, know something of him." C'mega began. "You could say that." Sally replied. "Before the coming of Chaos, nearly twenty five thousand years ago, the Society was a group of monks who refused to take sides in the god wars. Then came Chaos and the Emeralds. Because the Society had refused to take sides, they believed that the existence of a god of both matter and energy was a sign that they had been right, and thus were the chosen to rule Mobius. They embraced the gifts from the gods, the Chaos Emeralds, and began to study and work with the smaller ones. That is one reason that the Emeralds are so rare now, the wizards have all the small ones. In any case, the Society had become a Society of Wizards and..." "Excuse me," Sally interrupted, "But what is this Society? I mean, they were monks and became wizards, but where did they come from?" "Cats, in the old days any way, were outsiders from main Mobian society." C'mega explained, "But, when we tapped into the Emeralds, the old superstitions became cold, crule fact. We might have come to rule Mobius but for the Dragons, Druids, Echidnas, and the displeasure of Chaos himself." C'mega scowled, as if remembering bitter times. Sally blinked, then began to wonder exactly how old the young looking wizard really was. He did, after all, look the same as he had in 3237, when they had met before the Master Emerald. "Since the defeat in 3130, the Society has begun to drift apart. I myself left with bigger ambitions than using small Emeralds in simple spells." C'mega glanced up at Sally, then grew slightly darker in complexion. It took Sally a moment to realize that he was blushing. "I was really more interested in the affairs of one wizard in particular." Sally said after an ackward moment. C'mega made an inquiring noise, so Sally continued. "A wizard named Nagus..." "Nagus!?!" C'mega exclaimed with a start, "Short... hmm, what was he?... a good student, even if he couldn't hold a test tube in that claw of his..." "So you *did* know him!" Sally exclaimed, triumphantly. "Know him?!" C'mega scoffed, "My dear child, I was his fifth year professor. He was... class of 2007!" C'mega paused and did some quick math. "My, it has been a while." Sally let that pass, pressing her advantage. "Then you know something of the magic he used on the void?" she prompted. "Of course," C'mega replied, "He was always asking about theoretical magics like that. In fact, I still may have a copy of his grad thesis back home." "Umm," Sally began doubtfully, "I'm not sure if that's nessary. I was really more interested in what you know about the crystallization effect..." C'mega snapped back from reminiscing and starred at Sally, slightly slack jawed. "How did you know about the con position?" he demanded, "That lecture was sealed!" "Con position?" Sally asked, "You mean you *knew* that people might turn to crystal?!" "Well *of course*," C'mega told her, "That was why the Society refused to help him with his experiments, they thought he was too reckless and believed the Void to be dangerous. I never did find out what happened to him...." "As far as I know," Sally said, "Nagus is still in the Void, with my father. We found out about the crystallization effect when we tried to release them." "Ahhhh," C'mega said, thoughtfully stroking his shortly trimmed beard, "That is a problem." He paused a moment, considering. Then, a look of minor horror slipped onto his face. "The King banished... the Princess pregnant..." he murmured grimly, "could it be time?" He grew silent, the grim expression settling on him like a dark vale. "Time for what?" Sally asked softly. "Time for me to betray my own and fulfill prophecy." he said, turning away. "Who would have thought that it would be William Omega, professor of advanced magic studies and magic ethics, who was the one destined to break the Wizards vows?" Sally had the distinct impression that the conversation was now out of control. What was he talking about? "I don't want you to do anything that you don't want to." Sally said, trying to reassure the apparently upset cat. "I must test my theory." the cat said as if he hadn't heard her. C'mega reached into his cloak and, after a short search, pulled out a fist sized, mid-gray Chaos Emerald. He tossed it to Sally, who caught it automatically. "Now, when I give the signal, read this couplet aloud." he said, handing her a piece of paper. "Where did you get this?" she asked, starring at the Emerald. C'mega, however, wasn't listening. He had produced some sort of glowing ball, which was hovering over his right hand. "Now!" he shouted, winding up to throw the glow like a baseball. "Power of water, wind, and earth," Sally read, "Turn the spell back to its birth." As she recited the couplet, C'mega threw the glowing ball. As Sally finished, the globe reflected back and hit C'mega with an audible splash. C'mega sighed and began squeezing water out of his robes. "Well, that settles it." C'mega grumbled, "You used an old dragon spell, and you haven't had a wizard's training. You are the Princess who will seek the lost Sword, and your father is the Banished King." He walked over to Sally and plucked the Chaos Emerald out of her hand, much to her suprise. "And I am the Wizard who betrays the invasion." Without further comment, he exploded in a fireball. Sally waited a shocked moment, wondering where he had gone and if maybe she should have asked someone else for advice. Then, another flame erupted as C'mega returned. "Here," he said gruffly, "these are for you." C'mega handed Sally an old book with a faded leather cover and a small golden ring with a tiny green gem. "The book has some simple word activated spells and the ring is a magical power source so they will work." he explained. A number of questions popped into Sally's mind. She chose the most diplomatic one. "What do I need with them?" she asked. "How else are you going to keep from getting killed by wizards?" C'mega asked reasonably. Sally felt like either throttling the cat or running to the hills. Instead, she posed yet another question. "What are you talking about?" "The quest to find Malcom Acorn's Sword." C'mega replied, "It holds the power you need to free your father. However, the Society will be looking for it as well. You may encounter more freelance wizards or magicians on your quest, but always keep in mind that even freelancers may have hidden allegiances. And know too that not all wizards are cats." "A *quest*?" Sally asked, taken aback, "Isn't this a little sudden?" "Yes, it is." C'mega agreed. "Oh, by the way, the caves below Dragon's Nest are a good place to start. Just a suggestion." With that, the wizard vanished. There was no fireball or flame, he just stopped being there. Sally sat a moment, looking at the objects that C'mega had given to her. Then she pulled Nicole off of her boot and scanned them. "The book is approximately two hundred years old, Sally." Nicole told her, "And the ring contains a chip of Chaos Emerald." Sally looked at the ring with a bit more respect, then slipped it onto her right index finger. After another pause, Sally stood and went back out into the 'throne room'. She smiled as she spotted Sonic arriving. Quickly, Sally flagged him down. The hedgehog zipped up to her and smiled broadly. Together, the Prince and Princess of Mobius walked outside. "Sonic," Sally began, "I have to go to Dragon's Nest. I may be gone several days, so you need to tell Rosie that she and Amy are incharge of little Julayla until I get back." "No problem, Sal" Sonic told her. "What's up at Dragon's Nest?" "Just business." Sally replied. Sonic nodded, apparently deciding that her business was none of his. "Could you call Dulcy for me?" she asked. "Sure Sal." Sonic said before putting his fingers to his lips. He gave a high pitched whistle that, for on apparent reason, seemed to echo across the tent and hut dotted plain. Nicole had once explained how Sonic's whistles worked, but Sally had gotten lost in the techno-babble. Right now, she was only glad that it worked. Dulcy landed before them a moment later. "Hi Sonic, Sally, what's up?" the dragoness asked. Sally marveled at how much Dulcy had grown in the last several years. Much of Dulcy's almost comical bulk had been redistributed to her wings, neck, and tail, giving her a much sturdier look. Her forearms had developed retractable claws, and her feet claws had gotten much more authoritive. Her landing style had also matured, becoming a smooth and precise process. "Sal needs a ride to Dragon's Nest." Sonic told the dragon, who nodded and bent down to let Sally on. Sally put an arm around Sonic and gave him a long goodbye kiss. After a moment, they parted and Sally found her seat on Dulcy's back. Dulcy took to the air with an effortless asurty. "Read Julie a bed time story for me Sonic." Sally called back, hoping that she had given Sonic all the nessary info. "Check, Sal. Love ya!" Sonic called back. A few seconds later, Sonic and the rest of Mobotropolis was merrily a gray patch on the horizon. They were on their way. Chapter 2, In which Sally is polite to a dragon and learns the power of Dragon swear words. It had been awhile since Sally had seen Dragon's Nest. The place had turned from a collection of dusty ruins to a teaming air field. Dulcy glided in and touched down on a long flat strip of rock. Inspite of herself, Sally cringed slightly. "Be careful, Your face might Freeze like that." Dulcy told Sally with a smirk. Sally blushed slightly and dismounted. Then, Ducly led her into the caves where the King of the Dragons lived. Sally grew nervous as she felt the eyes of hundreds of Dragons watching her, many not nearly as nice as Dulcy. Finally, they arrived in a large, dark cavern. It took Sally's eyes a moment to adjust. She barely kept from gasping when they did so. Curled in the back of the cavern was a dragon about twice as big as Dulcy, and nearly four times longer. The Dragon King had gray-green scales with a hint of yellow, and deep red eyes. Its dusty yellow wings were folded back, giving the creature a relaxed look. Most surprisingly, however, was the fact that the King of the Dragons appeared to be female. "I'm Sally Alicia, Princess Royal of the House Acorn." Sally said formally, "I offer you greetings and good fortune in all your endeavors." The Dragon King looked at Sally and smiled a toothy grin. Sally curtsied as best she could without a dress, wishing that Dragons had fewer teeth. "Welcome, Acorn Princess. What may I do for you?" the Dragon asked. "Yes, um, if you wouldn't mind..." Sally replied, trying to gather her courage, "I'd like to, um, look through the caves below Dragon's Nest, Your Majesty." Both Dulcy and the Dragon King seemed slightly taken aback by this request. "May I ask _why_ you want to look through the caves under Dragon's Nest?" the King asked. "Um, I'm on a Quest to find a Sword and C'mega said I should start here, You Majesty." Sally said, trying not to look at the King's teeth. "How fascinating," came a resoundingly confidant voice behind her. Sally started to turn when a female Echidna of about 17 walked past. The girl wore a red dress that only accented the fact that her dreadlocks were deep black, as did the golden circlet on her forehead. Odder still, the girl wore a large sword on her belt. "Ah, Nia, you're back." the King said, smiling at the Echidna like she was an old friend. Sally also noted that Dulcy looked at the new arrival with utter respect, as did all the other Dragons in the court. "Yes." Nia said simply, sitting on a rock next to the King. "Now, Kazul, who is this?" she asked, apparently addressing the King. "This is Princess Sally Acorn." the King, Kazul, replied. The Echidna nodded and did a half bow in Sally's direction. Sally returned it, not wanting to offend. "You already heard what she wants." Kazul added. "Yes, and it sounds quite important." Nia said. Sally couldn't quite tell if she was being sarcastic or not. Nia turned back towards Sally and asked "Who is this C'mega person?" "He's a wizard that-" Sally didn't get to finish her sentence because, at that moment, every Dragon in Dragon's Nest roared in angry unison, Dulcy included. For a decidedly nasty moment, Sally thought she was going to be fried by a mob of angry Dragons. Nia jumped up, flipped some green stuff into the air, and muttered something all in one movement. Then, she stepped in front of Sally. This got everyone's attention and seemed to help calm the court down. "Please continue." Nia said firmly, going back to her seat as if nothing had happened. Kazul nodded, but kept an eye locked onto Sally. As quickly as she could, Sally told them everything that C'mega had told her. As she did, Sally watched the dragons' expression turn from anger to skepticism to astonishment and finally to knowing acceptance. Nia only smiled smugly. "I believe we can accommodate you." Kazul said, sounding a tad humble. Sally got the distinct feeling that they knew a lot more than she did. Dulcy looked relieved, but also a bit lost. Sally wondered if maybe her friend has forgotten to read some of the Dragon Lore that Protectors were supposed memorize. "Nia can take you." Kazul finished, snapping Sally from her thoughts. "Thank you, Your Majesty." Sally said, bowing as Nia and Dulcy showed her to the entrance to the lower caves. Then, Nia went to get some lamps. "Argelfraster." Dulcy muttered after Nia was out of earshot. "What?" Sally asked. Dulcy blinked, suprised that Sally had heard. "Oh, I was just hoping that Kazul would have given us a dragon guide instead of her Chief Cook and Librarian." Dulcy told her. Sally paused a moment, sorting through that sentence, then shook her head. "I meant, what does Argel-whatever mean?" she clarified. "Oh, Argelfraster." Dulcy said, blushing slightly. "I'm not sure. It's a dragon swear word I picked up." Sally nodded, wondering what sort of dragons Dulcy had been hanging out with. A few moments later, Nia returned with the lamps and they began their walk down the into the bowels of the mountains. After a time, they arrived at a pair of large iron gates. "Sally," Nia began, "please put your fingers in your ears." Sally shrugged and did so. Nia said something that Sally couldn't hear and the gates opened. "Thank you, _*Nia*_," snarled a voice behind them. As they all spun around, a long stick whipped out from the shadows and hit Nia in the side of the head. She fell, unconscious, to the stone floor. Dulcy snarled, firing her freeze breath into the shadows. The voice only laughed. Then, the figure stepped forward. "Did you really think I wouldn't be ready for Dragon breath?" the blue robbed, staff carrying feline asked, his cold blue eyes glittering. Dulcy snarled again and snapped her jaws at the Wizard, who nimbly side-stepped. Sally had never noticed how sharp Dulcy's teeth looked before, but didn't take time to examine them since they were obivously in danger. "What do you want?" Sally asked authorititatively. "Entrance to the Caves of Fire," he said, looking at Sally as if she was a school girl. "And who might you be?" he asked her. "I'm Princess S-" Sally began. "Never mind then," the Wizard interrupted, evading another of Dulcy's chomps, "No one of importance." Sally paused, suprised at being labeled as unimportant, then asked "Who are you?" Since he seemed to be talking, she might as well get some information out of him. "Entoral," he said, somehow bowing and dodging Ducly at the same time. "Of the Society." he added, sounding as if he expected applause. Sally merely raised an eyebrow. She was just waiting for his to try a spell on her; she wanted to try that reversing spell again. Entoral, however, didn't oblige. "Well, I have to be going." he said, heading into the new cavern despite Dulcy's efforts. "Argelfraster!" Dulcy cursed as the gates closed again. "What!?!" Entoral shrieked, "How did you know?! I'll get you for this Dragon! You too, whoever you are." he shouted to Sally. For a moment, Sally didn't know what he was upset about. Then, she realized that he was getting shorter. "You'll pay for this!" he continued as he reached half his original height. Sally noticed that a puddle of black goo was forming under him, and that it appeared to be forming out of him. "He's melting!" Sally exclaimed. "This isn't permanent, you know!" Entoral cried, his voice squeaking loudly, "I'll be back and I'll get you a..." his threats ended as his head dissolved into black goo, leaving his staff and cloak in the middle of a nasty puddle. "Ohhhh," Nia groaned, "What happened?" "Dulcy melted a wizard." Sally said. Nia glanced up at the young dragoness and smiled. Dulcy blushed. "I didn't _mean_ to." she admitted. "Still, you did a great job." Nia said, standing. "Did you happen to get his name?" she inquired. "Yes," Sally said, "he called himself Entoral." "Oh, him." Nia said with a chuckle, "I should have recognized the robes, I've seen them in that position often enough." she stated, pointing to the goo soaked rags. "Does he come here often?" asked Sally after Nia had reopened the doors. "No, fortunately." Nia reassured her, "Infact, I have no idea how he got in here. The Dragons guard these tunnels and he isn't that good of a Wizard." "He's pretty quick, thought." Dulcy observed. "Most Wizards are." Nia said, nodding. "Um," Sally began, "Shouldn't we be looking for whatever I'm supposed to find down here?" "I think I know what your rebel Wizard wanted you to see." Nia told Sally, not slowing her pace. "The chamber is this way." Sally sighed and followed, wishing that she knew what was going on. Finally they came to a large open area. Then, as they entered the chamber, everything went dark. Chapter 3, In which Sally loses her ring and gets some clues. "Phrazelspitz." Nia muttered, causing their lamps to relight. Sally barely kept from gasping as a large head was revealed. The face was about seven feet tall, brownish gray, and sitting in the center of the room. It was obviously some sort of carving, but Sally couldn't place the species. Sally also felt something wrong. It was a nagging feeling that something important was missing. She glanced behind her and saw both Dulcy and Nia standing there. Nicole was still clipped to her boot and the silly gold circlet that everyone insisted she wear was still on her head. Finally, Sally glanced down at her hand. Her wedding and engagement rings were still there, but the one C'mega had given to her was gone. Sally, wondering if she was on to something, reached into her pocket. The book was still there. She pulled it out and flipped it open, not really sure what she was looking for. "Doing a little light reading?" Dulcy asked. Nia hushed the dragon, then mumbled something and flicked her arm at the statue. Sally felt the room grow slightly... more charged was the only way she could describe it. Sally, deciding to rely on chance and instinct, closed the book and reopened it randomly. "And I say Sonic is reckless." she muttered. Then she looked down at the page. There were some Runes that she couldn't read and four lines in standard Mobian, though the print was highly stylized. The couplet seemed approiate, so she began... "By Caves of Fire, Chance, and Night, Aid me in my Dire Plight, Guide me to the Acorn Sword, So I may free our Banished Lord." she recited. As she finished, there was a slight rumble. It ended after a second... as the statue's eyes opened. "WHO SEEKS THE SWORD?" the statue asked in a deep, stony voice. "I, Princess Sally Alicia of the House Acorn, do." Sally said formally, hoping that that qualified her. "SO YOU CLAIM." the statue said, "BUT I REQUIRE PROOF. FIRST, WHAT IS YOUR SECRET FAMILY CREDO?" Sally, after a moments consideration, approached the statue's ear. "To rule with Honor." she whispered into the ear. "CORRECT" the head said, "WHERE DID YOU AQUIRE THE RING THAT I HAVE TAKEN FROM YOU?" "A Wizard named William Omega" Sally said, recalling how C'mega had addressed himself when recalling his past. "YOU ARE SALLY. NOW YOU MUST PROVE YOURSELF WORTHY. THIS IS YOUR TEST... TELL ME WHERE YOU FEEL MAGIC." it instructed. Sally felt a slight... something... to her left. "Left." she stated. The feeling ended, then came again in front of her. "Front." she said. The Feeling continued jumping, becoming fainter every time. Still, Sally was always able to find it. After the ninth time, the Feeling ended all together. "WELL DONE, PRINCESS." the statue said, "HERE IS YOUR REWARD." The statue's mouth opened and a small glowing ball floated out. The ball gave her the same feeling that the test had, but was stronger. It floated up to her, then ended. A necklace fell out of the air in front of her and landed in her hand. Then, the statue closed its mouth and shut its eyes. Sally took a moment to study the pendant. It was a golden chain with a two inch long piece of obsidian held by a gold setting at the top end. After a short examination, Sally put it on. It tingled slightly, emitting a pleasant hum. Sally sighed, finding the hum almost relaxing. It felt so... natural to wear it. She began to turn towards her friends when she felt a sudden tug from the pendant. She shifted the pendant and felt the tug again. Something was drawing the pendant, something magical. She smiled and walked over to Dulcy and Nia. "Wow, that's pretty." Dulcy said, "But aren't you a little under dressed for it?" "It's a homing device." Sally explained chipperly. She hadn't felt so good since... she wasn't sure when. "Thought so." Nia said with a smile. "I take it that that's what you came for?" she asked as they headed out of the Caves of Fire. "Apparently." Sally replied. "Thank you for all your assistance." "No trouble at all." Nai replied. "Good luck." she added as they arrived in caves familiar to Dulcy. They exchanged final pleasantries, then Dulcy took Sally back to the surface. "Which way?" Dulcy asked once they were in the air. Sally checked her medallion, then pointed towards the Great Unknown. "That way." she said. "If you say so." Dulcy said uncertainly. Then the dragon changed course and headed for the now setting sun. An hour of flight later, Sally spotted a relatively peaceful place to spend the night. Dulcy was settled and asleep before Sally had finished setting out her sleeping mat (which Ducly had been carrying in her pouch). "Soon Father." Sally whispered into the night air, "I won't be long now." With that oath said, Sally settled down to sleep. *** Hidden in the Great Mountains was a large castle. Inside that castle, a feline named Entoral was bowing down before a throne. "I'm sorry father, I have failed." Entoral said at the bottom of the large seat. "And got yourself melted again, I see." A grim voice that belonged to the throne's occupant, replied. "Ah well, they can't get the medallion either, without the Princess Acorn anyway." "Princess?" Entoral asked, gulping, "oh dear..." "There was a Princess?" the voice asked darkly. "Yes. I didn't think she was important." Entoral said. "Call the other Wizards," the voice commanded, "The time has come. We must stop her from finding the Sword." Several retainers ran off to carry out his instructions. "What are You going to do, Father?" Entoral asked as the figure rose from his throne. "I," Zemetor said, "have a trator to find." The black cat raised his staff and began a spell. It would take time, but Zemetor would find the one who broke his Wizard's vows. Find and Punish...
